COVID MIGRATION
Documented during the 2020 nationwide lockdown in India. Published in Outlook Magazine.
In March 2020, India suddenly went into lockdown. Public transport stopped, and many people lost their jobs overnight. Migrant workers started walking back to their villages. This work documents the journey of the migrant population fleeing Mumbai and other metros to reach home for survival. Many did not complete that journey.
I waited for hours on the highways, documenting people walking in the direction of their hometowns and villages. The focus was on their tiredness and helplessness in the face of the situation. I did not engage and maintained a distance while taking photos, given the COVID protocols. These journeys usually began from Mumbai to Sendhawa (M.P.), via Nashik. The vigil on the highways became my COVID routine.
Outcome:
The work was published as part of editorial coverage during the COVID-19 lockdown and contributes to the visual record of the migration crisis in India.
